Old Posts Marketing - Bids
Here's a tip - I started using a cover sheet with a picture of one of my decks and a "what you get" list of the kind of customer service we offer. This sheet goes on top of all of my bids now, and I serve it up in a nice presentation folder. I seem to be closing a few more decks than I was before, so it appears to help. I put the NADRA logo on there too.

Old Posts ICC FAH in Rochester - Week of 5/21/07
This is a summary of connections made and accomplishments during the ICC Final Action Hearings held in Rochester New York during the week of 5/21/07. This FAH marks the end of the 06/07, 18 month code cycle for various code bodies, including the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), International Fire Code, and others.

Our purpose in attending these hearings, and previous committee meetings has been to establish NADRA as an active player in the code development arena.

This is something that our supplier and manufacturer members have wanted, and up until now we have not been able to deliver on. For the past two years we have been attending the Code Technical Committee meetings and participating in the Climbable Guards Study Group [The CTC works on questions of code deemed by the ICC to need special attention due to complexity or controversy of an issue. The CTC then typically forms a study group]. Last year we worked with the CTC board to develop guidelines for balanced representation within a designated study group. We are happy to say that these guidelines have been formally adopted by the CTC and are now in practice.

This time with the CTC helped us establish contacts within the ICC, and with other code representatives including National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Stairway Manufacturers Association (SMA), Composite Lumber Manufacturers Association (CLMA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and others.

Our deck safety article is going out to members of the building trade (around 100,000) via NAHB’s weekly enewsletter - this week – as a direct result of this trip and working with code development VP for NAHB.

Also accomplished on this trip, NADRA has now been offered a test market through the Virginia chapter of ICC to begin our deck inspection education efforts directed to building inspectors.

Further as a result of this trip we are getting in on the ground floor of the formation of the Women in Code Development Chapter of the ICC, just now forming. (As you can imagine, women are a minority in this arena – this is sort of a formalization of the “old boys network” –for the gals - that will include networking, and some training in debate and procedures). This will also give NADRA greater visibility.

As you are aware, with the signing of the alliance agreement with CLMA in February, we formalized our relationship with this association to work together on code development in areas of mutual interest. Having laid the groundwork for this relationship (and others) prior to these FAH, we were able to build on this foundation to create real working relationships with various members of Kellen Company (the management company representing the CLMA, and a number of building related organizations). Kellen company had four code representatives at the FAH, including a division head. These people develop code for a living. NADRA is welcomed with open arms, and has been given an open door for being mentored through the hows and whys of the ICC, ICC-ES, ASTM, and other code processes.

The foundation for this relationship, and others, has taken two years. It has been worth the methodical progress in laying foundation. We now have a presence, and will be able to begin to support our supplier and manufacturer members in areas of code that affect them.

Significant time was spent with a code representative from Arch Chemical, who often finds himself a single voice on several issues. With NADRA now involved, we will be able to provide additional support to code issues of import to Arch as relates to the deck and railing industry. Most of our composite manufacturer members belong to CLMA; the CLMA now has additional support available from NADRA on industry related issues. We will be able to help other members working to protect their interests in the code arena in the same way.

A number of other code development professionals were met, who, like in many other professions, welcome the “new kid on the block” and have been mentors, and have now offered to do even more.

While it will still take a little time for NADRA to become a force to be reckoned with, we are now “in the game” and can involve ourselves in areas of interest to support the interests of the consumers and of our members.

Thank you for trusting me with this important task for NADRA. This is a crucial area of value for our supplier and manufacturer members. We have come a long way since the 19 guys and the hat in 2004. This will help our supplier and manufacturer members see serious value in their NADRA membership and will result in significant support for NADRA programs.

Please help get the word out that we are open for business and looking for serious participation from these members, so that we can help the industry and help them reach their code related goals.

Old Posts Lighting
I've been running 12 volt lighting cord thru the inside of railing systems for postcap type lights. When I am using 4x4 wood posts, I notch out a groove in the side - not very noticeable - but does anybody do it a better way?
